French nationality by marriage

French nationality by marriage

If you are married to a French citizen, you may, under conditions, acquire French nationality by declaration — a different path from naturalization by decree.

Authorities mainly check the reality of your shared life (living together materially and emotionally) and your assimilation into French society, especially during an interview where your French spouse must attend.

Main conditions you must meet

Official conditions are detailed on Service-Public. These are the most important:

  • Be married to a French citizen on the date of the declaration — your spouse must already have been French on the day of the marriage.
  • Marriage duration: usually 4 years. This becomes 5 years if, since the marriage, you have not lived in France continuously for at least 3 years, or, if you lived abroad, your French spouse was not registered on the register of French nationals established outside France during that period.
  • Continuous emotional and material shared life since the marriage (proof of a real life together).
  • Sufficient knowledge of French (proof according to current rules).
  • Assimilation into French society: assessed especially at the interview (adherence to Republican principles and values).
  • Usual documents: civil status records, proof of shared life (e.g. joint tax notice, children's birth certificates, address proofs), residence permit or passport depending on your situation.

The regulatory interview (as a couple)

You and your spouse are summoned to an interview. The reality of your shared life and your assimilation into French society are checked there.

You must sign a sworn statement confirming that your emotional and material shared life has not ceased since the marriage. A receipt is usually given at the end — keep it, because official deadlines often run from that date.

The French spouse’s presence is required. Prepare consistent, honest answers about everyday life, and a clear understanding of Republican values.

  • Speak clearly about your shared life (home, work, projects, children)
  • Bring the originals listed on the summons
  • Show assimilation: rights, duties and values of the Republic
